In 1989, San Francisco experienced a major earthquake measuring a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale. Earthquakes have produced over 55 Billion dollars in losses in California since 1971. The risks of fatalities are far greater in heavily populated urban centers, and densely populated buildings. Led by a specially trained Tenant Organizer, our Disaster Preparedness Workshops equip residents with survival planning strategies and instructions for creating emergency supplies to survive a major disaster. Stephen Tennis has been with CCSRO for over ten (10) years and is one of our longest-standing resident leaders. Although he has worn different hats during his tenure, today he is a Project Tenant Organizer, responsible for conducting Disaster Preparedness Workshops for residents in private and subsidized SROs across the Tenderloin, SoMa, and Mission neighborhoods. The way he sees it, “it’s not if we will have a disaster, but when.” Elaborating, Steve believes that “just one or two people in a building with the right information can make the difference between life or death.” Outside of our program, Stephen Tennis works hard to maintain the cleanliness and safety of parks in the Tenderloin as a TLCBD Park Captain. When asked to reflect on the journey that led him to Central City SRO Collaborative, Steve soberly admits that he feels blessed to have left that life behind. Always looking forward, he wishes to make his life about helping others. For Steve, that is akin to salvation.
