About Us

The Central City S.R.O. Collaborative was established in 2001 to organize tenants of Single-Room Occupancy (S.RO.) in San Francisco’s Central City neighborhoods including the Tenderloin and South of Market (SoMA) community.
This website is designed to encourage and facilitate community organizing in Central City S.R.O. hotels, improve tenants’ access to pertinent tenant’s rights information, and access to city and state building and health code laws.
S.R.O.’s are typically small eight (8) feet by ten (10) feet single room living spaces, generally with no kitchen and communal bathrooms on each floor. They are the largest supply of low-cost rental housing in San Francisco.
There are over five-hundred (500) S.R.O. residential hotels in San Francisco that are home to more than 30,000 low-income residents. These ‘hotels’ are infamous for dilapidation, poor maintenance, and numerous building and health code violations.
